ONLY THE GOSPEL

It’s fundamental and foundational

And its where good seed is sown;

It’s life-changing and transformational

And where faith and love is grown.

It’s the only piece of literature

That can save our soul within,

Because faith will come by hearing

With the hope and life it brings.

The gospel of our Jesus Christ

Is so simple and pure indeed,

That He died for our sins and rose again

So eternal life we see.

Once this seed is planted

In our heart it should bring change,

As it transforms and it renews our mind

Where doubts no longer will remain.

Only the gospel has the power

To reconcile us to the Lord,

Because it’s God love letter to us all;

It’s His inspired word.

The gospel melts the hardest heart;

Humbles the proudest of them all,

Because it refreshes the soul with plenty of hope

When our name the Lord will call.

Many books will inform us

But only the bible can transform,

Because it’s God’s healing touch upon our soul

As it corrects, instructs and warns.

Plenty of music can calm our soul

But it’s the gospel songs that absorb,

To bring a sweet smelling aroma to our heart

When we listen to God’s word.

There are many sources that do inspire

Whether they’re written or in songs,

But it’s the gospel that will pierce the heart

With what we’ve needed all along.

Only the gospel will satisfy

The insatiable hunger within,

Because it fills our soul with the required peace

That only Christ’s sacrifice can bring.

It’s reassuring and bridges the gap

Between us and the Heavenly Father,

It inspires us to walk the walk

Knowing there is a here-after.

Only the gospel will save our soul

Because it was the cross at Calvary,

That reconciles us to the Father

So eternal life we see.

“For I delivered to you first of all that which I also received: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, and that He was buried, and that He rose again the third day according to the Scriptures.”  1 Corinthians 15:3-4

“So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.  But I say, have they not heard?  Yes indeed:  ‘Their sound has gone out to all the earth, and their words to the ends of the world.’”  Romans 10:17-18

“O foolish Galatians! Who has bewitched you that you should not obey the truth, before whose eyes Jesus Christ was clearly portrayed among you as crucified?  This only I want to learn from you: Did you receive the Spirit by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith?”  Galatians 3:1-2

“All Scriptures is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness.”  2 Timothy 3:16

“For as the rain comes down, and the snow from heaven, and do not return there, but water the earth, and make it bring forth and bud, that it may give seed to the sower and bread to the eater, so shall My word be that goes forth from My mouth; It shall not return to Me void, but it shall accomplish what I please, and it shall prosper in the things for which I sent it.”  Isaiah 55:10-11

SUDDENLY!

When most things happen suddenly

There was a preparation taking place,

Behind the scenes and out of sight

Where no detail went to waste.

When a seed is planted in the heart

And thus comes to fruition,

It’s been watered and is nurtured

And will then complete its mission.

When we flourish suddenly

It’s not by luck or chance,

But due to background preparation

And not by happenstance.

It’s the sacrifice and tears

With the sweat and all the pain,

And those dreary and dull moments

Where not much hope will remain.

But it’s necessary to endure

Knowing there’s a reward in store,

For our faithfulness and perseverance

When we give a little more.

When Solomon built the temple

Preparation was not on site,

Since the stone was finished at the quarry;

T’was such an important plight.

So when suddenly the temple was built

It was indeed a masterpiece,

Where preparation was behind the scenes

Where much labor did not cease.

When Nehemiah rebuilt the wall

In fifty two days it was finished,

And his enemies were disheartened

Knowing by God’s help it was accomplished.

When machinery will finally work

It’s only due to the solemn fact,

That pieces were assembled separately

Before they were intact.

When suddenly there’s calamity

There was a plan prior to same,

Constructed in the heart and mind

And to destroy was its end game.

A divorce doesn’t happen overnight

But contemplated in the heart,

Many years prior to its execution

Before they’re suddenly torn apart.

The sudden pain and confusion

Is disheartening indeed,

But it was cultivated and watered within

And began with just a seed.

When our life and circumstances

Become a monotonous routine,

There’s a work being conducted behind the scenes

But one we cannot see.

When God prepares the soil

And will knit two hearts together,

And suddenly for His glory

We shall honour Him forever!

Suddenly when Christ returns

It will not be a surprise,

To those who have prepared their heart

And look forward to the prize.

“Solomon had seventy thousand who carried burdens, and eighty thousand who quarried stone in the mountains.”  1 Kings 5:15

“And the king commanded them to quarry large stones, costly stones, and hewn stones, to lay the foundation of the temple.”  1 Kings 5:17

“And the temple, when it was being built, was built with stone finished at the quarry, so that no hammer or chisel or any iron tool was heard in the temple while it was being built.”  1 Kings 6:7

“So the wall was finished on the twenty-fifth day of Elul, in fifty-two days.  And it happened, when all our enemies heard of it, and all the nations around us saw these things, that they were very disheartened in their own eyes; for they perceived that this work was done by our God.”  Nehemiah 6:15-16

“And this will be the sign to you:  You will find a Babe wrapped in swaddling cloths, lying in a manger.  And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying:  ‘Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, goodwill towards men!’”  Luke 2:12-14

“By your patience possess your souls.”  Luke 21:19

“But take heed to yourselves, lest your hearts be weighed down with carousing, drunkenness, and cares of this life, and that Day come on you unexpectedly.  For it will come as a snare on all those who dwell on the face of the whole earth.  Watch therefore, and pray always that you may be counted worthy to escape all these things that will come to pass, and to stand before the Son of Man.”  Luke 21:34-36

Stand therefore, having girded your waist with truth, having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace; above all, taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one.”  Ephesians 6:14-15

WHETHER OR NOT

Whether or not we believe in God

Will not change the fact He’s true,

Because our opinions are only temporary

Compared to His eternal truth.

Whether or not we choose to obey

Is a decision we need to make,

Because at the end of the day God never forces

Anyone their cross to take.

Whether or not we love Him

Will be determined by our faith,

And the works that result from it

That lead us through the narrow gate.

Whether or not we’re at war with our sin

Will be eventually revealed,

Because unless we experience the new birth

Our eternal life cannot be sealed.

Whether or not we are saved

Will depend on Jesus Christ,

And whether we received Him as Lord and Savior

And have come into the light.

Whether or not we believe Him

Will not change the truth and fact,

That He’s real, alive and will return one day

Where His promises never lack.

Whether we choose to trust man instead

With all philosophies and ideologies,

Will still not change the eternal fact

That God is who He says He is.

Whether or not we believe

That the bible is God’s inspired word,

Does not change the reality

That Jesus Christ is Lord.

Because whether or not we simply believe

Won’t alter the truth either way,

Because He’s the King of kings and Lord of lords

And forever this fact remains.

“And he who does not take his cross and follow Me is not worthy of Me.”  Matthew 10:38

A FOUNTAIN FOR THE SOUL

There is a fountain for our soul;

A refreshing flow and spring,

Like rivers of living water

To nourish and to cleanse within.

It’s renewing and so pure

That invites the new man in,

And sweeps away the cobwebs

Of our old nature within.

The fountain for our soul

Will lead to pastures green,

When the hand of God will come to cleanse

To instil peace so serene.

A fountain is inviting

With a promise and a hope,

And a beauty that’s inspiring

With creativity and scope.

It’s a sweet smelling aroma

And its waters they do dance,

To the rhythm of our heartbeat

And so dainty as they prance.

The calming nature of a fount

Will draw the eye to see,

The refreshing waters filled with life

And where the ear wants to be.

It’s soothing and so precious

With a warmth that’s rare and true;

The fountain with new beginnings

With a steadfast promise too.

It’s effervescent and inviting

And it washes and it cleans,

All stains of dirt and rubble

Whilst being a delightful scene.

The embellishment is flowers

And arrayed with all their glory;

They’re a masterpiece to behold

That each create a unique story.

The fount overflows with forgiveness

Pure and unadulterated too,

The river of living water from God

That is pristine and is true.

But when the fount is off

Much mould it can amount,

Because stagnant waters are unclean

When they are not stirred around.

It was the fountain at the cross

Where Christ’s blood was spilled indeed;

The fount that cleanses our soul within

So God’s wrath we do not see.

“But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.  Much more then, having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from wrath through Him.”  Romans 5:8-9

UPSIDE DOWN

The concept and the notion

When something’s upside down,

Promotes a vision of much disarray

And absurd it truly sounds.

But sometimes it’s the right way up

Without realising this indeed,

Because when someone’s bold to go against the grain

True vision he will see.

The Apostles in their boldness

Turned the world upside down,

Because there was a spiritual requirement

To turn all things around.

Their preaching it was fearless

And conducted with much prayer,

And radical in the eyes of men

With a zeal so pure and rare.

The culture of the day

Promoted every worldly way,

And was devoid of God’s commandments

Where truth and righteousness remains.

The Apostles were bold and courageous

But there was something deep within,

A conviction and love for their neighbour

To see them delivered from their sin.

So they went against the grain

As they revealed the status of same;

The true condition of the heart

Where deception it remains.

‘Troublemakers’ they were called

Because they challenged everything,

And brought to light truth and reality

With commotion this so brings.

When we accept corruption

By those in authority,

Our values and morals are upside down

Where we clearly cannot see.

There was One who turned the world around

And His name was Jesus Christ,

Who exposed the darkness and all pharisaical ways

As He shined His precious light.

That’s why He was crucified

Because His message was not received,

By those in authority

Who had secret lusts and greed.

Jesus came to set us free

Since we’re all captives indeed,

Who need deliverance and the Holy Spirit

So eternal life we see.

(C) P.B. 2021

“But when they did not find them, they dragged Jason and some brethren to the rulers of the city, crying out, ‘These who have turned the world upside down have come here too.  Jason has harboured them, and these are all acting contrary to the decrees of Caesar, saying there is another king – Jesus.’”  Acts 17:6-7

“I have had a dream: To my surprise, a loaf of barley bread tumbled into the camp of Midian; it came to a tent and struck it so that it fell and overturned, and the tent collapsed…Arise, for the Lord has delivered the camp of Midian into your hand.”  Judges 7:13-15

“He removes the mountains, and they do not know when He overturns them in His anger.”  Job 9:5

“He puts his hand on the flint; He overturns the mountains at the roots.”  Job 28:9

“Ephraim has mixed himself among the peoples; Ephraim is a cake unturned.”  Hosea 7:8

“Then Jesus went into the temple of God and drove out all those who bought and sold in the temple, and overturned the tables of the money changers and the seats of those who sold doves.  And He said to them, ‘It is written, My house shall be called a house of prayer, but you have made it a den of thieves.’”  Matthew 21:12-13

“But woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites!  For you shut up the kingdom of heaven against men; for you neither go in yourselves, nor do you allow those who are entering to go in.”  Matthew 23:13

“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites!  For you are like whitewashed tombs which indeed appear beautiful outwardly, but inside are full of dead men’s bones and all uncleanness.”  Matthew 23:27

“You shall love your neighbour as yourself.  Love does no harm to a neighbour; therefore love is the fulfilment of the law.”  Romans 13:9-10

COMPLEX AND SIMPLE

Oh Your masterpieces that are fashioned

Are so intricate indeed;

A complex system with many networks

And so brilliant to hear and see.

The detail of Your every design

Is too much to comprehend,

And all outstanding operationally

All created by Your hand.

How complex and so vast

Is the universe that spans forever,

With every planet and every star

They’re masterpieces altogether.

The brilliance of the human body

With a design that will maintain,

All functions that work in harmony

And where intelligence it sustains.

The hand of love that will extend

Is in every simple act,

It’s phenomenal that’s deep and true

When mercy never lacks.

The water that refreshes us

So simple but sustaining,

And mandatory for our existence

It’s like crystal drops when raining.

Too wonderful and too majestic

To be accidental indeed,

With all information and the DNA

Emanating from a seed.

It’s Your majesty that humbles us

As we realise we’re just a speck,

And a vapour as our days are numbered

Where for You we have respect.

Your simple plan to bring salvation

Through Your precious only Son,

Reveals a heart of pure love and grace

That extends to everyone.

“Then God saw everything that He had made, and indeed it was very good.”  Genesis 1:31

“The hearing ear and the seeing eye, the Lord has made them both.”  Proverbs 20:12

“I know that whatever God does, it shall be forever.  Nothing can be added to it, and nothing taken from it.  God does it, that men should fear before Him.  That which is has already been, and what is to be has already been; and God requires an account of what is past.”  Ecclesiastes 3:14-15

“Heaven is My throne, and earth is My footstool…For all those things My hand has made, and all those things exist, says the Lord.”  Isaiah 66:1-2

“All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made.”  John 1:3

“For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.”  John 3:16

IN THE END

In the end it will not matter

Whether we’ve achieved all in our life,

Because blessed is the soul who is forgiven

Where God’s mercy will suffice.

In the end it simply will not count

If we’ve made a successful living,

But rather whether our heart was right with God

And whether it was forgiving.

God won’t look at our possessions

To give us an applause,

But will look at the hidden motives within

And whether we were inspired by His cause.

In the end it will not matter

Whether our externals were correct,

Because everything ages and will sag

And our beauty they’ll forget.

It’s the motives of the heart He watches

And whether the new birth we did see,

To become reconciled with God through Christ

To be who we were created to be.

In the end we all will stand

To individually give account,

Let’s ensure we are covered by Christ

And to present all that will count.

The end of the race

Is really what will matter,

And unless we’re trained to endure the pain

Our dream of winning can be shattered.

It’s a long and narrow path

Where all baggage cannot sustain,

Nor can enter through the eye of the needle

Where only an imperishable crown remains.

(C) P.B. 2021

“Blessed is he whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered.  Blessed is the man to whom the Lord does not impute iniquity, and in whose spirit there is no deceit.”  Psalm 32:1-2

“And you, being dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, He has made alive together with Him, having forgiven you all trespasses, having wiped out the handwriting of requirements that was against us, which was contrary to us.  And He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross.”  Colossians 2:13-14

“Do you not know that those who run in a race all run, but one receives the prize?  Run in such a way that you may obtain it.  And everyone who competes for the prize is temperate in all things.  Now they do it to obtain a perishable crown, but we for an imperishable crown.”  1 Corinthians 9:24-25

“For as the heavens are high above the earth, so great is His mercy towards those who fear Him; As far as the east is from the west, so far has He removed our transgressions from us.  As a father pities his children, so the Lord pities those who fear Him.”  Psalm 103:11-13

“Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all His benefits:  Who forgives all your iniquities, who heals all your diseases, who redeems your life from destruction, who crowns you with lovingkindness and tender mercies..”  Psalm 103:2-4

“Repent, and let every one of you be baptised in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.”  Acts 2:38

“Jesus answered and said to him, ‘Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.’” John 3:3

“He who finds his life will lose it, and he who loses his life for My sake will find it.” Matthew 10:39

‘IF THERE’S A GOD’

We’ve heard it many times

‘If there is a God indeed,

Why is there so much evil

And why does He not intercede?’

And again, ‘If there is a God

Why do people suffer with cancer,

And children sold as sex slaves?’

As they eagerly await the answer.

There is no clear answer

Since we’re not God or have His mind,

But there are several possibilities

To leave all doubt behind.

Firstly, most issues are self-induced

And to this we can testify,

Because if evil flows from the lips

It will kiss all peace goodbye.

Secondly, there is an adversary

The enemy of our soul,

Who comes to kill and to destroy

And to cause suffering is his goal.

Thirdly, there are worldly ways

Where negativity and all its greed,

Will bring to life confusion

And many doubts our mind it feeds.

There also is much jealousy

Where inwardly the curses flow,

And anxieties combined with fear

That become our greatest foes.

Additionally, there is the heart

That is defiled from within,

When it chooses to reject the Lord

And continue in its sin.

Bad things happen all the time

That’s why we need protection,

In the spiritual realm that is more real

Which requires much reflection.

If God eliminated all wickedness

He’d have to wipe us all away,

Because there is none righteous, no not one

Who is sinless every day.

God is real and He is pure

And abhors all evil indeed,

And has reserved a day of judgement

In which He will intercede.

He’s being kind and patient

And it’s His will that none will perish,

And is waiting for repentance

And for His ways we adopt and cherish.

He’ll judge according to our faith and works

As all will be revealed,

So let’s encourage one another to get right with Him

Where our eternity is sealed.

(C) P.B. 2021

“He who would love life and see good days, let him refrain his tongue from evil, and his lips from speaking deceit.”  1 Peter 3:10

“Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour.”  1 Peter 5:8

“Do not love the world or the things in the world.  If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.  For all that is in the world – the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life – is not of the Father but is of the world.  And the world is passing away, and the lust of it; but he who does the will of God abides forever.”  1 John 2:15-17

“For love is strong as death, jealousy as cruel as the grave, its flames are flames of fire, a most vehement flame.”  Song of Solomon 8:6

“For God is not the author of confusion but of peace…”. 1 Corinthians 14:33

“The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked; Who can know it?”  Jeremiah 17:9

“And it is appointed for men to die once, but after this the judgement.”  Hebrews 9:27

“But I say to you that for every idle word men may speak, they will give account of it in the day of judgement.”  Matthew 12:36

“Who will render to each one according to his deeds, eternal life to those who by patient continuance in doing good seek for glory, honour, and immortality; but to those who are self-seeking and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness – indignation and wrath, tribulation and anguish, on every soul of man who does evil…”. Romans 2:6-9

“And I saw the dead, small and great, standing before God, and books were opened.  And another book was opened, which is the Book of Life.  And the dead were judged according to their works, by the things which were written in the books.”  Revelation 20:12

“The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is long-suffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance.”  2 Peter 3:9

DECEPTION

It will never come with horns

Nor with a red cape too,

But rather as everything we’ve ever desired

That appears wholesome, good and true.

But when we eventually acquire

We realise it doesn’t fulfil,

Since the only true satisfaction

Is found in God’s plan and in His will.

Deception is a web

It’s a trap to entice our soul,

To make us believe we’ll be content

If we acquire that thing or goal.

Deception will hide the pitchfork

Because it comes as an angel of light,

To tempt and to bring delusions

But to appear with delight.

It’s through deception that people perish

When they believe their way is right,

And too arrogant to take correction

Or too nonchalant to fight the fight.

Jesus warns of deceptions

Because He knew too very well,

Satan’s schemes and all his tactics

With all disasters they do spell.

Don’t trust those who promise the world

Or if the offer is too good,

Because most times there’s a trap

With underlying motives not understood.

Because our fleshly and our carnal ways

Like to be tantalised indeed,

With one more thrill and a little excitement

With some new adventure to see.

Deception feeds on lust

And will gain a true stronghold,

When idolatry and all covetous ways

In our soul take a grip and hold.

Deception is a sword

And most times we’ll never know,

Because we can be sincere but sincerely wrong

And in vain our seed we sow.

God is not a God of confusion

And will renew and cleanse our mind,

To give clarity with His wisdom

So we leave deceptive tactics behind.

(C) P.B. 2021

‘And no wonder! For Satan himself transforms himself into an angel of light!”  2 Corinthians 11:14

“There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way of death.”  Proverbs 14:12

“The woman said, ‘The serpent deceived me, and I ate.’”  Genesis 3:13

“Do not desire his delicacies, For they are deceptive food.”  Proverbs 23:3

“Again, the devil took Him up on an exceedingly high mountain, and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory.  And he said to Him, ‘All these things I will give You if You will fall down and worship me.’  Then Jesus said to him, ‘Away with you, Satan! For it is written, ‘You shall worship the Lord your God, and Him only you shall serve.’”  Matthew 4:8-10

“And Jesus answered and said to them:  ‘Take heed that no one deceives you.’”  Matthew 24:4

“And many will follow their destructive ways, because of whom the way of truth will be blasphemed.  By covetousness they will exploit you with deceptive words; for a long time their judgement has not been idle, and their destruction does not slumber.”  2 Peter 2:2-3

WHAT DOES IT PROFIT?

What will it profit us

If we gain the world but lose our soul;

To have abundance with all the riches

But rot in eternity behold?

What will it profit us

If we’re the most successful in our field?

Since it’s the eternal rewards that really count

Where dividends they yield.

Granted we’re to put our heart

Into everything we do,

But unless we give God all the glory

The reward cannot be true.

To have the latest and the greatest

Leads to much deception indeed,

Because that spirit of competition

To much depression it can lead.

When many place themselves in debt

To outdo their neighbour as well,

This can only lead to heartache

And disaster it can spell.

What’s the point of being beautiful

With a body that is inspiring,

When the inside is filled with covetousness

And constantly desiring?

Because it’s the beauty that’s incorruptible

Of a gentle and quiet spirit,

With kindness and with meekness

And much joy and peace within it.

What’s the point of climbing corporate ladders

When manipulation does take place,

And where all morals and all ethics

Do not combine or interface?

What’s the point of self-centredness

When one day it comes to an end,

And where vanity took a firm stronghold

With strong delusions that it sent?

What’s the point of appearing

To have it all and altogether,

But where foundations they are shallow

And no trials they will weather?

What does it profit in the end

If for self-serving ways we lived,

And for our glory and our pleasure

Where our heart refused to give?

What on earth does it profit

If we lose our precious soul?

Let’s wake up and let’s repent

Before it’s much too late behold!

(C) P.B. 2021

“For what profit is it to a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul?  Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul?”  Matthew 16:26

‘Rather let it be the hidden person of the heart, with the incorruptible beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is very precious in the sight of God.”  1 Peter 3:4

“Take heed and beware of covetousness, for one’s life does not consist in the abundance of the things he possesses.”  Luke 12:15

“And everyone who competes for the prize is temperate in all things.  Now they do it to obtain a perishable crown, but we for an imperishable crown.”  1 Corinthians 9:25
