When one is considered as poor
It’s described as lacking a normal supply…
Perhaps destitute and penniless
And living below the poverty line.
But blessed are the poor in spirit
For theirs is the kingdom of heaven;
Recognising their spiritual bankruptcy
And who avoid doctrines with leaven.
We cannot make ourselves worthy to God
Since only a Savior can reconcile;
When we realise our own spiritual currency
Is futile in God’s eyes.
We are taught psychological solutions
With self-realisation on the rise,
But unless our identity is grounded in Christ
We will believe every doctrine and lies.
The poor in spirit have realised
That their sinfulness is real;
It’s where God has worked in their heart
So they can begin to heal.
The poor in spirit are meek
Who’ve understood the reality of same;
That the riches of God are stored for them
Who honour His statutes and name.
The poor in spirit are rich
Because the humility they display;
Is precious in God’s eyes indeed
It’s a beauty that will remain.
The poor in spirit are selfless
Because it’s not about them anymore;
It’s the bigger picture they have in mind
With the salvation of souls in store.
